In the first stanza, the speaker depicts how the lives of themself and their partner had not truly started until they met eachother. Before they met they were still like children. The speaker realizes that any love they experienced before was fake. In the second stanza, the speaker described how their love will thrive, since to the speaker their love controls everything in the world. In the last stanza the speaker again states that their love cannot die as both of their loves are one, with perfect balance.
The meaning of morrow is “the near future”. Thus, the meaning of the title, “The Good-Morrow” depicts how the speaker believes that the future of themself and their partner will be bright.
I found it quite difficult to think of a message for this poem, but the message that I came up with is that there is a person somewhere that is perfect for you and you should strive to find that person.
The topic of this poem is the love between the speaker and their partner and the idea of love as an awakening, as in the speaker awakening from their childlike state when they found their partner.
The poem has a light tone and is intimate.
This poem is written from the perspective of the speaker.
The poem is mostly written in Iambic Pentameter, besides the last verse of each stanza, which is written in Iambic Hexameter. The rhyme scheme of this poem is ababccc/dedefff/ghghiii.
John Donne was born into a rich family on 21 January 1572. After his father’s death when he was four years old, he was trained in scholarship using the wealth of his family. While he was studying at Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four Inns of Court, institutions where law is taught, he wrote his first poems as a hobby. One of these poems was “The Good-Morrow”. It is believed that “The Good-Morrow” is the first poem that John Donne has written.
